Do you owe to look after your garden in Winter?
Winter is the proper season to develop preventive actions and remaining job in the garden. Firstly we suggest you to make a little inquiry based on the following three questions:
1. What climate does in the zone where you live?
2. How does the garden's soil absorbs water?
3. Where is it sunnier or more shaded garden's zone?
Now we advise you to reach a perfect garden:
1. Nobody knows everything: to be aware of your limits is a virtue. In case of not knowing how to do an specific task trust on experts.
2. Pull up the weeds: they must be erased!
3. It's time to know 'mulching': this technique consists of using pinnace, straw or leaves to protect plants from frost.
4. Prune carefully: focus on the bushes or trees that in Winter are 'naked'. If you live in the interior of Spain ('continental climate') you shouldn't until the end of the season because the frosts would destroy the plant. On the contrary, in front of the sea ('temperate climate'), you will be able to prune earlier. At the beginning of February it is the turn of bushes and rosebushes. Attention: never do it with plants that flowering in Winter.
5. Prepare the garden material: plants in Winter need almost no water. So, it's time to check the different irrigation systems, and install the automatic, mount the lighting or install pots.
6. Do not plant anything below 0 celsius degrees: frezee are deathly.
7. Don't cut or step on the grass: the way of the grass is opposite to that of trees, hedges or shrubs they doesn't require to be pruned, in the cold it should be high. Another thing to take care of is not to walk on the grass.
8. Act before the appearance of pests or parasites: the cold is deadly for the 'bugs'. Now the climate works in your favor! It's time to build your protection with winter mineral oils (those which are legal) so they kill pests.
9. Bet on the creepers: start padding the wall with them or with red fruits for spring.
10. Bet for ecological fertilizers: it is important to emphasize that they are for spring not for winter.
11. Protect fruit trees: it is a privilege to enjoy them but beware these trees do not resist direct exposure to cold, support the fabric, with wooden stakes.
12. Put structures attached to young trees: all species when they are young need support to grow.
13. To remove or not to remove the snow this is the question: a layer of snow protects against future frosts. However, when the weight of the snow endangers the branches you must remove it..
14. Sometimes you will have to irrigate: opt for this only if the winter has been very dry.
15. Cut your plants: 'to cut your plants is to separate a small part of the mother plant in order to create a new specimen (...) if they are deciduous plants, they must be multiplied in autumn-winter'.
In this post we have given you a new year resolution: to have a wonderful garden!.
